Gulamali Mahmadali Meghani fondly and popularly known as GM passed away in Bhavnagar, India on Friday 16 June 2017, 20 Ramadhan 1438.

Marhum was a very active community member at personal level, Jamaat level and Federation level. He was active in Gujarat Federation and then in Council of Gujarat. He was a dedicated social worker and a philanthropist who worked tirelessly for various educational, housing, social and economic upliftment programs in Gujarat, rest of India and world over. He was instrumental in making sure many families became owner occupiers of their own homes. He supported many families to be economically independent and he supported many students throughout India in school and university education. He donated generously at times of disaster. He has financed the building of several mosques, Imambaras and madrassas.

He actively supported World Federation projects in Gujarat. He encouraged and transformed youths into budding entrepreneurs. He worked actively in JIBA International to bring the world wide Khoja business and professional community into one common platform.

Over the last two years he made several visits to Iraq and through his personal efforts, managed to get back the Musafarkhana properties in Iraq which had been confiscated by the Saddam regime. The Najaf Musafarkhana has already been renovated and is serving zawwars. The Kerbala Musafarkhana has been demolished and is being replaced with a new structure.

Marhum was a trustee of Al Mahdi Foundation which runs Mahdi school. The school has 2,700 students from nursery to degree level. He used to spend a couple of hours daily in the school. Last year he personally supervised the construction of the new College building. Currently Marhum Gulamali bhai was leading the first Khoja University project in Gujarat.

Marhum was also a trustee of Haji Naji Memorial Trust. This trust republishes books written by Haji Ghulamali Haji Ismail popularly known as Haji Naji. It also has an online Shia Islamic Library.

Marhum was a true symbol of a quiet and diligent social worker with no fanfare but worked solely for the pleasure of Allah (swt). His simplicity and humbleness was the hallmark of his character and appearance. His loss is not only to his family but to the Khojas community as well.
