All over the world, innocent children are suffering in one way or another. Some are starving. Some have no families. Some are homeless and have no safe place to sleep at night. They live in a state of constant fear and unhappiness.
As the moon of Muharram appears in the skies, we are reminded of the important sacrifices made by Imam Husayn (as), his family and his companions on the land of Karbala some 1,400 years ago as they stood to defend truth and justice for all of humanity. Ali Asghar (as) was the youngest martyr in Karbala who was denied even a drop of water before leaving this world. In the spirit, of keeping the message of Imam Husayn (AS) and the martyrs of Karbala alive, The World Federation is launching the MUHARRAM 1437 APPEAL: ALI ASGHAR WATER APPEAL to build 40 water wells in 40 days in the deprived areas of Kenya and Syria.
THE WATER CRISIS IN RURAL KENYA
According to the United Nations, Kenya’s population is one of the most struggling populations in the world. With over 36 million people living there, water scarcity has been an issue for decades where natural water resources fail to provide an equitable delivery of water to the various regions of the country. This leaves most of the population without any fresh water. As a result, women and children spend up to one-third of their day travelling up to 10 kilometers fetching water in the hot sun from the nearest fresh water source. This is backbreaking work which leaves roughly half of the country's inhabitants vulnerable to serious health and security dangers.
THE WATER SITUATION IN REFUGEE CAMPS IN SYRIA
An estimated 460,000 Palestine refugees in Syria need urgent access to clean water. Currently, there is an increased incidence of communicable disease, bacterial infections and other water related conditions throughout the Palestine refugee community in Syria. In August 2015, credible reports of cases of typhoid in and around the area of Yarmouk were reported; Yarmouk has been living under siege-like conditions since December 2012 where water and sanitation infrastructure have been severely damaged, and access to food and basic healthcare is close to inexistent.
ABOUT THE APPEAL
The ALI ASGHAR WATER APPEAL - 40 WATER WELLS IN 40 DAYS is a 40-day campaign to raise funds to build 40 water wells in Kenya and Syria. These wells will provide families with access to clean water for a healthier and improved quality of life.
