Healthy Living

We are living in a society that is more health-conscious than ever before. Nutritional supplements and super foods are taking over our supermarket shelves and modern and affordable gyms are opening up and down the country.

The truth is that while intense fitness regimes and sophisticated gadgets work for some, we’re probably overcomplicating things, and being a little healthier can be much simpler than you might believe.

Walking is not only one of the simplest ways to improve your health, it is also one of the best ways to increase your physical activity! Walking more through the day can help shed those extra pounds, stop you feeling tired and ensure that you enjoy a better, healthier life. Not to mention, walking is something most people can do, regardless of their individual fitness level.

We've got some ideas below to encourage you to take more steps, or you can be more committed and join the community in our 10,000 step challenge.

Small changes lead to BIG changes

One reason that people often lack exercise is that they simply don’t have the time, usually due to a hectic lifestyle of having too many responsibilities.

In actual fact, it’s much easier to incorporate exercise into our daily routine than it is to find extra time for it. Making small changes to our individual lifestyle can have a much bigger impact when it comes to improving our overall health!

Smalls steps do add up! Let’s take a look at some ideas below:

1. Take the stairs at work (or out and about) instead of the lift

2.  Get off the bus a couple of stops earlier, or park at the end of the car park

3.  Make those short trips by foot - it's better for the environment too

4. Get the family involved too and go for a winter walk to explore parks or the city

Making similar changes to our diets is also important!

Experts say that it’s far easier to cut calories than to burn them, but you don’t need to take on too much at once. Swapping the milk for water in your hot drink, substituting your daily chocolate bar for a healthier snack (fresh berries are great in winter) and using wholegrain options when it comes to bread, pasta and rice can all have lasting impacts on our health. There’s plenty more you can do too.

This January, our very own health and lifestyle guru Dr Mahmood Mawjee is encouraging all community members to sign-up for the 10,000 steps challenge!

Challenge yourself, friends and work colleagues to work towards walking 10,000 steps a day, and take advantage of the health benefits this will bring. Register your interest to get involved and find out more.
