The benefits of having a university education are manifold and range from financial to cultural. The Holy Prophet (SAW) has said “Seek Knowledge even if it as far as China.” A perfect example of this quote was done by one of our very own community sisters. Fatima Munir Walji has gone all the way to Korea to achieve her dream of learning 15 languages. This is her story!
The World Federation’s Education objective is to empower the Khoja community with the ability to improve their quality of life and this is achieved through Higher Education. Our goal is to enable growth and progress through education, creating a generation of skilled individuals who will work together to improve and strengthen their communities.
The Hiridjee Family Loan for Female Students has been one of the fundamental Loan Schemes that has been publicised for all community female students requiring financial assistance to achieve their goals and career aspirations. The Trust Fund has made a provision to sponsor two female students for up to a maximum of three years at GBP 10,000 p.a. Since 2008, the Hiridjee Family Loan for Female Students has been launched on a yearly basis with the exception of 2009 and 18 female students benefitted from 2008 to 2014.
This year The World Federation had an amazing turnaround of nine applications for this generous and steady loan scheme. Four applicants were shortlisted and Mashallah each and every application looked promising. Their excellent academic performance in addition to their voluntary involvement in the community was commendable. The Loan Application Committee (LAC), with the generous support of the Trust, decided to grant the loan to all four applicants.
The successful recipients of the 2015 Hiridjee Family Loan are: -
Fatema Punjani
Fatema is a highly motivated, goal oriented and conscientious and has had an outstanding academic performance throughout. She is studying Ophthalmic Dispensing at City University of London. She has done part time work at an Optician and she has gained first-hand experience in her field. Her compassion towards helping her patients is very refreshing. She is also a very active participant in sports activities. She has been awarded GBP 10,000 p.a for three years.
Tanvir Allidina
Tanvir is a very ambitious, highly motivated and goal oriented student. She has chosen a field that is modern and in sync with the current trends. She is a very active volunteer and has been involved in creating awareness and fundraising by organising activities for Breast Cancer. She is a well-rounded student who is a participant in sports as well as community service. She is a third year undergrad Mechatronics Engineering student at De Montfort University and has been awarded with GBP 8,000 for her final year.
Rahat Sumar
Rahat is very ambitious about human rights and activism and has a very strong belief in women taking a stand in society. She is a third year student studying Politics and History at SOAS University of London which concentrates on Political History related to the Middle East, Africa and Asia. She is very hard working and is currently working for Press TV to get first-hand experience in her chosen field. She has been awarded with GBP 10,000 for her final year.
Fatema Sugra Merali
Fatema Sugra strongly believes that all children should be treated and provided with equal opportunities in education. Both normal and challenged children have a right to this gift. She is very passionate in reforming the world’s attitude with this regard and to be able to do so she has chosen to do a Degree in B.A in Education from University of Birmingham. She has been awarded with USD 6,000.00 p.a for three years.
