This Eid may your house be filled with loved ones, your table laden with delicious dishes and desserts, may your walls echo laughter and happiness; a day of celebration. However, this Eid will be one full of sadness and worry for our Muslim brothers and sisters from Syria, known as ‘refugees’ to the world; though they are like us, with hopes and dreams for their loved ones and family.
In September 2013, communal riots broke out in India’s Muzaffarnagar town in Uttar Pradesh, displacing thousands of people who are now living in relief camps. Because of curfews imposed by local police, residents are restricted from leaving their homes to earn for their livelihoods. To make matters worse, temperatures dropped considerably this winter, making it very difficult to bear the cold. Pneumonia, cold and flu are a few ailments that have been reported from these camps.
Indian media reported that a 4-month old girl whose family was displaced in the riots died from the cold. In another case, a 5-month old baby died from pneumonia. At least 34 children living in these relief camps have died between September 7 and December 20, 2013 during which time the winter chill intensified.
The World Federation’s partnering agency in India visited the people of Muzaffarnagar and shortlisted 140 families who are very poor and desperately in need of warm blankets. Most of these families comprise of widows.
Thanks to our team on the ground, The World Federation has already authorised the purchase and distribution of warm blankets to these families. The cost of one blanket is £8.25 GBP / $13.85 USD-CAD. Please donate to the Hadith-e-Kisa Blanket Drive so that we can assist these families during this bitterly cold season.
