This year, over two million people around the world will InshAllah flock to Iraq to commemorate Arbaeen. We share below reflections from one of the zawaars who will be going to Iraq this year and inshAllah undertake the walk from the Holy City of Najaf to the land of Karbala:
“In a day’s time, I’ll be leaving with a group of my family and friends, leaving behind everything familiar, to make this amazing trip to the land of my Imams (AS).
I cast my mind back remembering another time, another family who left their hometown, and everything they loved, to venture out into an unknown future. Except their fate was different. For Husayn and his family (AS), only the women and children were to return back. And this drives me on..

The World Federation of KSIMC in the UK gained membership of the Religious Education Council of England and Wales at its annual general meeting on 6th November 2014 at the Zoroastrian Centre in Harrow, London. The Religious Education Council of England and Wales (REC) unanimously approved the application from the World Federation to join the council. Al Haj Naushad Mehrali, the head of Madrasah Centre of Excellence, represented the World Federation at the meeting and presented a brief overview of its objectives and activities before the voting took place on the membership application. |
Objective is to ensure pupils have a strong understanding of the central role of religion in Britain’s culture which is an important part of the government’s plan for education. To ensure pupils gain a much better grounding in religious studies than ever before, the Department for Education has worked extremely closely with representatives and experts from all the major faith groups to develop the rigorous new qualification.
Brief reports were presented by the Expert Advisory Group, Qualifications Committee, Public Relations Committee and the Young Ambassadors for RE. Members and attendees of the REC, were pleased to welcome The World Federation of KSIMC as a member. Aliya commented “Alhamdulilah the members of the REC accepted the application of World Federation of Khoja Shi'a Ithna'asheri Muslims and you will make an outstanding contribution to the field of RE at the national level for the whole of the British society” They expressed their desire to see more Muslim organisations coming on board.
The Religious Education Council of England and Wales was established in 1973 to represent the collective interests of a wide variety of professional associations and faith communities in deepening and strengthening provision for religious education. It provides a multi-faith forum where national organisations with an interest in supporting and promoting religious education in schools and colleges can share matters of common concern.
Aliya Azam, Education and Interfaith Co-ordinator at the Al Khoei Foundation, said:
“The Al Khoei Foundation welcomes the new criteria for religious studies and values the efforts of the Department for Education and the Religious Education Council of England and Wales for emphasising the importance of inclusion of the diverse traditions within each faith in the religious education curriculum.”
