Ramadhan Relief 1435: The World Federation sends emergency aid for flood victims - Sri Lanka

As the Muslim world begins preparing for the Holy month of Ramadhan, the people of Sri Lanka will be welcoming this divine month in hardship after torrential rains caused flooding and mudslides across the island nation on 4th June 2014.

Sri Lanka is situated on a monsoon belt where flooding is common from the summer’s annual rain showers. However, this year, despite the severity of the floods, local farmers are embracing the rain to seek relief from the drought that has seized the region since November 2013. One-third of Sri Lanka’s 8.6 million people active in the labour force depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Since the drought, many farmers have been out of work as harvest levels plunged.

The World Federation is working with its regional partner in Sri Lanka to deliver emergency aid to flood victims in the Wattala area where about 300 families have been displaced. These families are presently taking shelter in mosques, temples and schools and have been provided with food parcels. As the flood waters begin to recede, and the families return to their homes, each family will receive an ‘Emergency Relief Pack” which will consist of:

  • Rice (10 kg)

  • Lentils (2 kg)

  • Sugar (2 kg)

  • Tea Leaves (1 kg)
  • Biscuits (5 packets)
  • Mats (2 each)
  • Pillows (2 each)
  • Bed Sheets (2 each)

PLEASE DONATE:

The cost of one ‘Emergency Relief Pack’ is $45 USD and The World Federation is preparing to deliver one each to 300 families in Wattala, Sri Lanka. Please donate generously to the Ramadhan Relief Fund 1435. As we enter the month of Ramadhan, your contribution will help support these flood victims in their time of need.
