Ramadhan Relief 1435: The World Federation sends team member to Iraq to assist with relief efforts

Given the current situation in Iraq, more and more families are feeling the impact of the ongoing attacks by extremist groups. Aid agencies like the United Nations are working hard to ensure that help gets to the intended people. To this end, The World Federation has sent a member of its own team to Iraq to assist with Ramadhan Relief efforts as well as to assess the overall humanitarian needs in the region.

The work on the ground in Iraq has started where food baskets have been prepared and are being distributed to families. On the first day of Ramadhan, our team member wrote to us with his observations and experiences of the Ramadhan Relief Program hard at work in Iraq. Here is what he had to say:

“Nowhere have I ever come across the truest embodiment of selflessness and humanity than in the city of Najaf in Iraq. Here I met some truly inspirational people, some in their early teens, and some blessed with the wisdom of old age; all working to develop that potential amidst the fear, warmongering and burning heat of Iraq.

It is the first day of Ramadhan, 30th June 2014. We are in the city of Najaf in Iraq. The news cycle is filled with doom and gloom, the saga of Iraqi politics, a nation that has faced war, dictators and negative media press for decades. It is easy to become negative.

Yet, amongst such masses exist a group of people - those who are willing to meet negativity with positivity, apathy with activism, and hysteria with control. Their actions are well thought out, their efforts tackle the crux of the problem and provide support to those most affected. Their task is quite simple, their objective is quite noble, and minds are quite active; as they are distributing aid to those who will see hardships over these next few months. Not only are these individuals distributing aid to the neediest in society, they are keeping detailed records in order to one day provide an economic development solution. They truly appreciate the old proverb, ‘Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach a man how to fish, feed him for a lifetime.’ Though, the need at the moment exists for giving a man a fish, it is the objective of professionals working in the developmental sector to point out, that the solution lies in Economic Development and not just providing aid.

The money and kind donations given by the caring individuals from across the world is being used in aid work, food and economic development. The World Federation of KSIMC’s Ramadhan Relief Program chooses to focus on an Economic solution to the problem because we appreciate how such warmongering outside Iraq is causing an even deeper problem of further fragmentation. It is for that reason we choose to focus on aid delivery, in order to turn negativity into positivity and provide economic development in the lives of those who have been greatly affected by poverty and deprivation.

Your donations and gifts are making a big difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Iraq. It is beautiful to see the dua and answer of: ‘O Allah! Alleviate poverty and protect our fellow Muslimeen’.”
